August 1st ~First Fruits: Honoring our personal harvest ~ Lara Dionne

This is the first traditional harvest holiday in the ancient Celtic calendar, followed by Mabon and Samhain. We will give thanks for the Earth’s edible generosity and think about what we have harvested spiritually, intellectually and physically during our individual growth cycles this year, and throughout our lives.

Many Americans mistakenly believe that democracy and majority rule are the same thing. Quite the contrary, protection of minority right is an essential and indispensable part of democracy. Such rights need to be respected even if the majority opposes such tolerance.

August 22nd ~ Singing Meditation ~ Rev. Carie Johnsen

This service will introduce the practice of singing meditation, which combines repetitive singing of short, simple, interfaith songs with periods of directed and undirected silence.

August 29th ~ Is Beauty Truth? Is Truth Beauty? Is That All We Need to Know? ~ Jim Mckenna

We will discuss eloquence and the relation of beauty to truth. Attendees are invited to bring a brief favorite example of eloquence (written or sung) and be ready to describe why they so value it.

I count myself among life’s optimists. My glass is always three-quarters full-at least! At the same time, I really do try to avoid denial. When the glass gets empty, I do notice. I was thinking of all this recently in connection with how I think and write about Small Group Ministry. I could be accused of rose colored glasses and I would have no defense.

I know, and have written often that Small Group Ministry has been the source of much that is good for our congregation. Friendships have formed, support has been given and received, we have learned to listen to one another in a deeper way. We, as individuals and as a congregation have grown and changed with Small Group Ministry.

I have glossed over the reality that sometimes growth comes with pain and struggle. Participation in a Ministry Group means risking. Perhaps you will encounter a difficult personality, someone you would not have chosen for a friend. It will surely be a challenge to practice listening to this person. I would say this is a wonderful opportunity to grow. You might say you aren’t sure you want to grow in that particular way. It can happen that someone in your Group will say something that hurts you. You will need to decide how to respond. Will you address the individual? Will you bring it up to the Group? Will you decide that Group is no longer meeting your needs? How will you respond if you know someone is leaving your Group because of an unspoken resentment?

What if the resentment is addressed and not resolved? What are the responsibilities that Group members have to the Group, to the individual members of the Group and to themselves when there is conflict?

These are questions that have no right answer. They are questions that go to the heart of what it means to be an individual in a group and in a community. As challenging as these questions can be, struggling with them will provide an opportunity for personal discovery and growth.

I invite anyone who wants to know more to speak with me. Several Groups have openings!

And you are invited to the Open Group on March 21, either at 10:30 or 12:15 at 71 Winthrop St. Find out how a Small Group Session works.

Dr. Laurel Coleman has recently returned from her work in Haiti. She will share her experience and talk about the ongoing needs of the Haitian people.

March 14th The Privilege of Stewardship Rev. Carie Johnsen

Every year in Unitarian Universalist churches across the country the annual pledge drive is launched with celebration and worship. This service will follow the Pacesetters Reception and the Kick-off Celebration. It is a privilege to be stewards. It is a privilege to prepare a service celebrating stewardship. Let the celebrations begin.

March 21st A Path to Happiness – The Five Mindfulness Trainings Peaceful Heart Sangha

In our stress and anxiety filled world, it is sometimes hard to find the energy to function at all, let alone be happy. Two thousand six hundred years ago a young man discovered a path through the pain of life that led to peace. Members of the UUCC Peaceful Heart Sangha will share some of their experiences exploring their own footsteps on that path.

Those participating will include: Lorna Doone, Greg Fahy, Pam Robson, Christine Little, Marty Soule, and Vendean Vafiades

March 28th The Auction Sermon Rev. Carie Johnsen

In the 2009 UUCC Spring Auction, the high bid for a sermon title went to Jane Gilbert and Nancy Fritz.
The auction item included dinner for four. Thus Rev. Carie will prepare dinner and the sermon title and content will be discussed over seafood lasagna. May we all be surprised by their choice.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has offered me kind words of encouragement and wisdom as I begin my service to the UUCC as president of the Board of Trustees.
I look forward to working with you all in the coming church year and would love to hear from you on any topic.

On Sunday, September 13th, Debbie Mattson, Unitarian Universalist Community Church President welcomed me to the congregation by telling the congregation, she had experienced me as being both gentle and bold. Thank you Debbie.

But what I experience as truly bold is the membership of this congregation speaking out publicly for inclusive practices and for marriage equality.

So let me join the long line of Maine citizens who are bravely and boldly planning to make history on Nov. 3, 2009. This week I acquired my Maine driver’s license and turned in my voter registration card. As a resident of Maine, I will vote for marriage equality at the voting booth. I am late on the scene here. Others have paved the road, I now travel with relative ease.

On March 1, 2009, after three years of congregational discussions, workshops and retreats, the Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Augusta voted unanimously to become a welcoming congregation. The following May, the Unitarian Universalist Association officially recognized UUCC as a Welcoming Congregation committed to being more inclusive towards gay, lesbian, bisexual, and/or transgender people.

On May 6, 2009, Governor John Baldacci signed into law a freedom to marry bill approved by the Maine Senate and House.

On Sept. 14, 2009, UUCC Board of Trustees followed their long standing inclusive practice of speaking out for equality. They voted unanimously to become a public voice in the fight for marriage equality in Maine.

Unitarian Universalism is a bold faith tradition with a long history of justice seeking. Faith in action is a vital part of our living tradition. Our faith values call us to “Stand on the Side of Love.” Our faith principles call us to fight for justice, equality and compassion in human relations.

On November 3, 2009, the citizens of this state will vote to uphold the civil rights of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender couples to marry. Now is not the time to be complacent. Now is the time to stand boldly with the Vote NO on 1 – Protect Maine Equality Campaign. The undecided votes need us to humanize this issue and make it about real Mainers.

Our faith principles also call us to a free and responsible search for truth, the right of conscience and the use of democratic process. Whatever your position is on this ballot question, I encourage you to search deeply in your heart as you approach the voting booth this next November.

In faith,

Rev. Carie Johnsen

As you receive this newsletter, I will be returning from my summer vacation back to the corner of Winthrop and Summer. I am writing this note on June 21 as I contemplate departing the office and the congregation for a week at General Assembly (GA) and July vacation. If all goes as I anticipate, I will have gathered with colleagues and friends at GA, spent a week in SD with family, a week on Cape Cod with friends and a week sailing Penobscot Bay on the Grace Bailey.

Last year was our time to get to know each other, grow Faith-in-Action, share community, celebrate our new ministry and care for each other in times of deep sorrow and grief. I am looking forward to entering into our second year in shared ministry together. Please stop by the office in August to tell me about your hopes, visions and dreams for the upcoming year. It is a good time to visit as the pace of ministry is more relaxed.

In gratitude and faith of all that is UUCC, Rev. Carie Johnsen
